Abstract

Soil erosion due to traditional mode of farming is considered a serious environment constraint to agricultural and rural development in Maharashtra state of India. This paper attempts to study the impact of Gawsud watershed project on changes in land use pattern and cropping pattern of selected farmers. In the study comparison has been made between beneficiary and non-beneficiary farmers in the command area of the project. The comparative study indicated that the land holding was higher on beneficiary farms, while irrigated area was higher in beneficiary than non-beneficiaries. The cropping intensity was higher in beneficiary farm (170.75 %) than non-beneficiary (159.02 %). Area under soybean, jowar, groundnut and sugarcane was more with beneficiary farmers as compared to non-beneficiary farmers. The cropping pattern in the post development period of watershed shifted in favours of commercial and high value crops. Such an analysis will help in launching different programmes for developing agriculture in the state. Result of study will help policy makers,administrators and research worker for development of agriculture in different fields to plan their strategies for overall development of state

Abstract

Dairy enterprise, next to agriculture, not only provides continuous income and improves dietary standards of family, but also supplements the income and reduces unemployment to a large number of the rural people. This study was conducted to study the various constraints faced by these dairy farmers while managing their enterprise. The study was conducted in Latur district of Maharashtra state. Two tahsils and four villages from each tahsil were selected randomly. Fifteen dairy farmers from eight villages were selected to comprise a sample of 120 respondents. The multistage random sampling was used to select district, tahsil, village and dairy farmers. The respondents were personally interviewed and the data collected were processed and statistically analyzed by using statistical techniques like frequency and percentage. During research it was found that, lack of storage facilities for milk, high cost of concentrates and distant location of Artificial Insemination Centers are three major constraints to the dairy farmers in management of their dairy enterprise.

Abstract

Recently the phenomenon of suicides of the farmers in Marathwada and other part of the country is one of the most tragic events in the history of India. In Marathwada particularly in low rainfall and low irrigation tracts, farmer's suicides have been happening in droves and the frightening phenomenon continues to persist and recur year after year, without any signs of abatement, hence, this issue has been an important among thinkers, researcher and social workers. The data from twelve respondents were collected from Parbhani and Beed district with the help of interview schedule. The results of the case studies pointed out that the causes of suicide are complex as are the causes of any social phenomenon. The main causes behind suicides found were indebtedness, low productivity, crop failure, low income, more expenditure than income and inability to fulfill family requirements. Majority family members of the deceased farmers suggested for remunerative prices to their farm produce, complete waiving of old loans, immediate Govt. help in natural calamities, provision of irrigation of facilities, sound infrastructure facilities for agriculture, creation of subsidiary occupation and other income sources and provision of labours at cheaper rate as the important measures to be taken to prevent the recurrence of suicide tragedies.
